I cropped out the long stretches of level flight and uploaded this 7min 36sec clip to YouTube. You can view the video on the RV-12 News Portal Page (where it is embedded) or you can go to the YouTube URL. The first actual spins occur around the 2min 20sec mark. Around the 3min 50sec mark the stall tests with tufts of yarn taped to the wing begin. Very interesting to watch!
Special thanks to Van's Aircraft, Inc. for providing this footage. dr

World renowned Swiss wingsuit flyer Ueli 'Sputnik' Gegenschatz, who recently base jumped from the world famous Eiffel Tower in Paris, travelled to the west coast of Ireland over the Bank Holiday weekend to compete a unique project.

'Sputnik' flew unaided a distance of 17.6kms, which is the longest recorded flight distance in a wingsuit ever undertaken, gliding from above the edge of Inis Mor over Galway Bay to Connemara regional airport near Inverin in Co Galway. Sputnik also beat the flight time of the Aer Arann Islander passenger aircraft, which travels this route daily in seven minutes, by a full 75 seconds.

In order to complete the distance, 'Sputnik' needed to exit his skydiving aircraft at an altitude of 4,500 metres. He flew across the Atlantic waters at a glide ratio of 1:4 metres travelling at an average speed of 250km/hr with the aid of a strong tailwind. The passenger aircraft, with a top speed of 193km/hr, took off from Inis Mor airstrip cruising at an altitude of 200 metres as 'Sputnik' exited his aircraft high above the island.

'Sputnik' released his parachute 200 metres above the mainland before touching down on the runway at Connemara Regional Airport clocking a time of 5 mins 45 sec. "I was fortunate to have very strong tailwinds on the day which increased my chances of making the long distance. It enabled me to reach an average speed of 250km/hr and make the crossing. I was happy not to land in the ocean as I've heard the Irish waters are very cold!"

"Sputnik" has been on a global quest to find the most challenging terrains of the world to traverse in his specially designed wingsuit. His adventures have brought him to The Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps, Popocatepetl, the second highest peak in Mexico and now to the Aran Islands on the Atlantic coast of Ireland.

Using a Garmin GPS tracking device on his wrist, Sputnik transmitted data back to his laptop on the ground which calculated his top speed and average speed during the race.

http://www.flyinginirelandmagazine.com/component/option,com_hwdvideoshare/Itemid,109/task,viewvideo/video_id,247/

This is the moment a Boeing 727 passenger jet was crashed into the Mexican desert — on purpose.

The plane was deliberately destroyed for a documentary about surviving plane crashes, produced by the Discovery Channel and the UK's Channel 4.

The plane is seen in amateur video flying low over the Sonoran Desert of Baja California, Mexico, as a helicopter flies alongside, filming it as it hits the desert floor.

A pilot flew the plane out to the desert and ejected minutes before it was remotely crashed.

The actual footage filmed for the documentary has not yet been released.

The plane can carry up to 170 passengers but contained only crash test dummies and video cameras when it crashed, the Telegraph reports.

Channel 4 senior commissioning editor David Glover said the program would investigate how to make plane crashes more survivable.

"This is a ground-breaking project, allowing a team of leading international scientists and crash investigators the first chance for a generation to study the crash of an entire passenger jet to investigate what really happens to the airframe and cabin ... as well as the effects on the human body," he said.

An airworthy Boeing 727 can be bought for about $9.5m, but it is not known how much the documentary producers paid for the plane before crashing it.

The plane used in the documentary was built in 1978 and registered in 1979.

According to its stated registration it was the same plane used by Bob Dole for his failed 1996 bid to become President of the United States.

The Boeing 727 stopped being produced in 1984 when it was officially replaced by the Boeing 757.

http://www.flyinginirelandmagazine.com/component/option,com_hwdvideoshare/Itemid,109/task,viewvideo/video_id,224/

This week the Dutch company PAL-V announced the first flights of its prototype "flying car".
This unique vehicle is called the PAL-V One, or the 'Personal Air and Land Vehicle', and It marks the start of a new era.

On the ground the vehicle drives like a sports car. Within minutes its rotor is unfolded and its tail is extended: then it is ready to take off thanks to the advanced gyrocopter technology.

With these successful test results it is proven that it is not only possible to build a flying car but also that it can be done within existing international rules for both flying and driving.

Having passed this important milestone the company is now inviting investors to join them in creating the future.

The next step will be the design of the first commercial production model of the PAL-V, and first deliveries are expected in 2014.

For 100 years people have dreamed of a flying car, and many attempts have been made to realize this dream, but now it has truly become a reality.

Just because you don't hear any ribbing from Kerby doesn't mean he didn't give it. His answer to "tell us about the other pilots" brought a quick smile and the answer, "They're all legends in their own minds."

I have always dreamed about this. But after 8 months of hard work, research and testing it all payed off. Enjoy!

Aer Arann Tribute 2012 - Goodbye Aer Arann Regional becoming Aer Lingus Regional

http://www.flyinginirelandmagazine.com/component/option,com_hwdvideoshare/Itemid,109/task,viewvideo/video_id,215/

It has been announced that on the 25th March 2012 all Aer Arann Regional services will be re-branded into Aer Lingus Regional operations. This will mean an end to the Aer Arann brand and RE flight numbers. Aer Arann will still exist but operating this franchise rather than under it's own brand, they will still fly the aircraft and employ people and importantly will still be flying.

Aer Arann has undergone huge changes in the past year under immensely challenging times for the aviation industry. With the economic turmoil in Ireland, and globally, the introduction of huge hikes in APD in the UK, the loss of PSO routes in Ireland. Hopefully this new venture (similar to the way in which Scotland's regional airline Loganair operates) will mean stability and growth for Aer Arann and it's people moving forward.

It will be a sad day for me to see Aer Arann brand disappear, I've supported them a lot over the past few years, and the loss of any livery (despite how bland it became recently) makes aircraft spotting that bit less interesting, however I hope this 'tribute' video shows a fraction of the footage I've gathered of Aer Arann over the years. Stick with it to the very end to see how the brand will be displayed in future.

Good luck to the people of Aer Arann, thank you for the many great trips to Galway Airport and others.
