Fly on water thrust. This new jet pack idea may not be the best way to get to work, but it sure does look like a good time. The German company MS Watersports GmbH is marketing the water-pressure-powered JetLev-flyer "jet pack" and selling it (lessons included) for about $128,000 ... or just about what a brand new two-seat 120 mph light sport aircraft would cost you. But you can't use one of those underwater. For what it's worth, we'll bet this thing makes significantly more noise, too.Video narrated/edited by Glenn Pew for AVweb.comhttp://www.glennpew.com [More] [Less]

The USS Midway CVB-41 has dropped its anchor permanently in front of the San Diego skyline. The decommissioned aircraft carrier has been turned into an impressive museum that draws huge crowds in San Diego Bay but as part of the activities leading up to the Red Bull Air Race in San Diego 2007 the Midway was briefly put back into service of sorts -- used as a temporary runway.Red Bull Air Race pilot Kirby Chambliss (USA) took advantage of the opportunity to take off from the aircraft carrier's flight deck in his Edge 540 out of the bay towards the race track. While the USS Midway had a top speed of 33 knots, the Red Bull Air Race planes used by Chambliss and his rivals can hit up to speeds of 400 km/h (250 mph)."It was an interesting experience," said Chambliss, adding he did not have nor need the slingshot that fighter planes use to get aloft. "There was plenty of room. The flight deck was about 780 feet long and I got right up with about 150 feet to spare."http://redbullairrace.com [More] [Less]

The spin was supposed to be a normal erect spin to the right, but for various unintentional reasons the spin went flat, up until that point I had never flat spun an aircraft. I eventualy mananged to get the aircraft into a normal erect spin from which I was able to recover. This aircraft is not fitted with an electric starter motor, so I was unable to restart the engine. During the "flare" to land the main undercarriage caught the top wires of a barbed wire fence that was invisible to me. After coming to rest inverted I waited 20mins for the rescue services to come and right the aircraft so I was able to exit via the outward opening canopy. The aircraft rotated 26 times total, I was extremely dissorientated after the recovery to straight and level flight, and was unable to read the instruments. From the video I estimate I recovered at about 700ft from an entry altitude of 3500ft. If you listen carefully you will hear me say:"I think this is it". At that stage I did not think I would be able to recover. However I continued to try various control inputs based on the aircraft attitude and rotational rate, which eventually effected a recovery. My thanks go to the emergency services that found me and allowed my escape. Watch in HD http://vimeo.com/1122166World renowned Swiss wingsuit flyer Ueli 'Sputnik' Gegenschatz, who recently base jumped from the world famous Eiffel Tower in Paris, travelled to the west coast of Ireland over the Bank Holiday weekend to compete a unique project.'Sputnik' flew unaided a distance of 17.6kms, which is the longest recorded flight distance in a wingsuit ever undertaken, gliding from above the edge of Inis Mor over Galway Bay to Connemara regional airport near Inverin in Co Galway. Sputnik also beat the flight time of the Aer Arann Islander passenger aircraft, which travels this route daily in seven minutes, by a full 75 seconds. In order to complete the distance, 'Sputnik' needed to exit his skydiving aircraft at an altitude of 4,500 metres. He flew across the Atlantic waters at a glide ratio of 1:4 metres travelling at an average speed of 250km/hr with the aid of a strong tailwind. The passenger aircraft, with a top speed of 193km/hr, took off from Inis Mor airstrip cruising at an altitude of 200 metres as 'Sputnik' exited his aircraft high above the island.'Sputnik' released his parachute 200 metres above the mainland before touching down on the runway at Connemara Regional Airport clocking a time of 5 mins 45 sec. "I was fortunate to have very strong tailwinds on the day which increased my chances of making the long distance. It enabled me to reach an average speed of 250km/hr and make the crossing. I was happy not to land in the ocean as I've heard the Irish waters are very cold!""Sputnik" has been on a global quest to find the most challenging terrains of the world to traverse in his specially designed wingsuit. His adventures have brought him to The Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps, Popocatepetl, the second highest peak in Mexico and now to the Aran Islands on the Atlantic coast of Ireland.Using a Garmin GPS tracking device on his wrist, Sputnik transmitted data back to his laptop on the ground which calculated his top speed and average speed during the race. dead stick take-off, 2 mile flight and landing. The hill starts out easy and gets progressively steeper. The last 150 feet of take-off roll it is 70% grade.
